Afrodeutsche, Nathan Fake, Laraaji, more remix the sound of the earth on new compilation

A new compilation commissioned by National Geographic and Alaska’s Anchorage Museum sees a number of musicians rework and remix sounds recorded from the earth.

‘Stations’ is the tenth compilation in the ‘Field Works’ series, from Brooklyn label Temporary Residence Ltd., and has its origins in producer Stuart Hyatt working with a team of scientists from the EarthScope experiment to record sounds using ground recording devices.

The sounds were subsequently manipulated and processed, and then an ensemble of musicians and vocalists – including Laraaji, Masayoshi Fujita, Hanna Benn, Janie Cowan, Qasim Naqvi and Brad Weber – were invited to rework the sounds across 10 compositions.

The release also includes remixes of their work by the likes of Afrodeutsche, Nathan Fake, Alva Noto and Sophia Loizou.

‘Stations’ will be released by Temporary Residence Ltd. on 1st April. Check out ‘Station 5’, and its accompanying remix by Nathan Fake, below.

Last year, ‘Stations’ contributor Afrodeutsche launched a new weekly show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Next month, she’ll play at fabric’s All Queens party, curated by Mary Anne Hobbs, to mark International Women’s Day.
