Hannah Laing announces Crowdfunder to launch Dundee community DJ studio

Hannah Laing has started a Crowdfunder campaign to launch a new community DJ studio in her hometown, Dundee. 

The Scottish DJ and producer is partnering with homelessness-focused non-profit Turn the Tables and the charity Street Soccer Scotland. The organisations will be responsible for day-to-day operations at the facility, which is being named doof Studios – a reference to dance music in general and Laing’s recent single, ‘Into the Doof‘. 

Located at the Change Centre Dundee, formally Lynch Sports Centre, Laing wants to establish a base for local aspiring electronic music talent to practice and improve their skills. Prioritising low income households, people with disabilities, those affected by homelessness, mental health issues, and crime, the campaign has a target of £15,000 to cover equipment and staffing costs, plus renovation of the space itself. At the time of writing, almost £13,000 had been donated. 

“It’s not often you get the chance to truly give back to the place you grew up in,” Laing wrote on the Crowdfunder page, which explains Dundee is a “creative hub”, birthplace of the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ video game franchise, Beano comic book, and dance music stars KILIMANJARO and Van Damn. 

“But despite the city’s creative success, Dundee faces deep rooted social problems such as poverty, youth inequality, mental ill health and drug addiction. Problems we believe music can help solve,” the Crowdfunder statement continues. “doof studios will provide a much needed space for budding DJs to hone their craft to follow in the footsteps of their favourite DJs.”
