T.H.E – Hi Alphones, how are you?
Alphones – Hey! I’m doing well, thanks. Busy with some new projects and feeling inspired—ready to push my sound even further.
T.H.E – When was the last time you felt creatively stuck in the studio?
Alphones – It happens to all of us! The last time I felt really stuck was a few months ago while working on a track that just wouldn’t come together. I stepped away for a bit and returned with a fresh perspective, which helped me find the right groove and finish the track.
T.H.E – What’s the last plugin or piece of gear you couldn’t resist buying?
Alphones – Recently, I added the FabFilter Pro-Q3 to my setup. It’s incredibly versatile and precise, helping me shape my sound exactly how I want. It’s become essential for achieving clarity in my mixes.
T.H.E – When was the last time you recorded a sound from outside the studio for a track?
Alphones – Not long ago, I recorded some ambient city sounds from a night out. I wanted to capture that raw, urban feel, and it added a unique texture to the track. I like incorporating real-world sounds to give a more organic feel.
T.H.E – What’s the last collaboration that pushed you out of your comfort zone?
Alphones – I recently worked with another producer who comes from a more minimalistic style. It challenged me to focus on space and subtlety, which was new for me since my usual sound is more energetic and layered. It ended up being an inspiring experience and taught me a lot about restraint.
T.H.E – When was the last time you scrapped a nearly finished track, and why?
Alphones – A few months ago, I had a track that was 90% done but just didn’t feel right. I realised it didn’t match the energy or vibe I was aiming for. Sometimes, starting fresh is better than forcing something that doesn’t fully resonate.
T.H.E – What was the last sample you used that gave a track new life?
Alphones – I used a classic vocal chop that I manipulated to fit a tech house groove. It transformed the track, adding a catchy element that brought everything together. Small changes like that can really elevate a track.
T.H.E – When was the last time you learned a new production technique?
Alphones – Recently, I started experimenting with adding subtle saturation using vintage EQs. It adds warmth and character to my sound, giving it a more analog feel. It’s made a noticeable difference in my productions.
T.H.E – What’s the last piece of advice you received that shifted your approach to production?
Alphones – A fellow producer once told me, “Less is more.” It sounds simple, but it really made me rethink my approach. Instead of adding more elements, I focus on refining what’s already there. It’s helped me create cleaner, more impactful mixes.
T.H.E – When was the last time you stayed up all night working on a track?
Alphones – It wasn’t too long ago! When inspiration strikes, I lose track of time. One night, I got into a flow working on a track’s arrangement and ended up finishing the entire structure by morning. It was exhausting but worth it.
T.H.E – What was the last track you finished that you’re most proud of?
Alphones – The last track I’m really proud of is ‘Freedom.’ It’s a blend of everything I love about House and Tech, with intricate rhythms and a deep groove. It captures my current sound and represents where I am creatively.
