Electronic music fans are most engaged users on SoundCloud, data shows
A new report from SoundCloud states that fans of electronic music are the most engaged users on the platform.
SoundCloud revealed the data during a panel between the platform’s reps and Dutch DJ/producer Mau P as part of Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). It was also revealed that electronic music fans are 52% more likely to comment, 104% more likely to share music and 85% more likely to repost.
SoundCloud’s USP as a direct line from artists to fans has long been a selling point, but the data indicates that it’s become even more popular with producers, particularly those making electronic music in recent years. A 21% rise in electronic music uploads is expected this year compared to 2023. There was a 6% rise in electronic music plays since 2022 and these genres are expected to make 22% of all plays this year.
During a panel at IMS Ibiza this year, Jack Bridges of SoundCloud said during a panel that “a lot more artists and labels go to SoundCloud early… and build records from nothing and by artists messaging their fans directly because we have the tools to do that.”
House music was reported to take the top spot for most plays, listening time and greatest audience. Hardcore took second place for plays and listening time. Trance scored second for audience size and third for plays and listening time. Trance was also said to be the fastest-growing genre on the platform, scoring a 24% increase in listening time and an 11% growth in listeners since 2023.
It was announced in January this year that SoundCloud would go on sale for over $1bn. SoundCloud also announced a new merch store that allowed artists to keep 100% of the profits.
