Chicago DJ Michael Serafini’s family launches GoFundMe following serious accident

The family of Chicago DJ and Gramaphone Records owner Michael Serafini has started a GoFundMe campaign to support his recovery following a serious accident in August.

According to the fundraiser, which was launched on 26th September, Serafini suffered a fall while moving into a new home, resulting in multiple fractured ribs, a spinal injury and a lacerated skull that required ten staples.

His sister, Tina Serafini, who organised the fundraiser, said, “Michael has dedicated his life to his art, his passion for music, his talent behind the decks, and being the best friend, brother, and advocate for a better future for the Chicago music community. Now it is our turn to pick up our friend, DJ, and small business owner with your support.”

Serafini, a staple of Chicago’s house music scene, is a resident DJ at Smartbar’s weekly Queen! party, where he regularly plays alongside Derrick Carter and Garret David. He also manages Gramaphone Records, one of the city’s most iconic record shops, known for its deep connection to house music culture. Before this, he was a resident at the legendary Boom Boom Room and got his start in Berlin in the ’80s as a remixer and videographer.

The accident has left Serafini with significant medical expenses and his lack of health insurance has made his road to recovery even more challenging. Tina Serafini said that Michael spent weeks in the hospital, undergoing treatment for his injuries, which included draining fluid from his lungs. Though he is now home and on the mend, there remains a long path of rehabilitation, with ongoing costs for hospital bills, medication, and physical therapy.
