DJ Paulette announces Welcome To The Club book launch events in Manchester and London

DJ Paulette has announced launch events for her debut book.

One of Haçienda’s pioneering DJs, the Manchester house icon will launch her debut book, Welcome To The Club: The Life and Lessons of a Black Woman DJ, at two events in January.

DJ Paulette, who has been pivotal in several of the most significant moments in European electronic music history, will be in conversation with Jamz Supernova at HOME in Manchester on 25th January. The following night – 26th January – she will launch the book at Soho House in London, in conversation with Jacqueline Springer, followed by a DJ set alongside Marcia Carr.

Published by Manchester University Press on 23rd January 2024, Welcome To The Club: The Life and Lessons of a Black Woman DJ gives a candid insight into the 30-year career of DJ Paulette, confronting the exclusion, misogyny, racism and classism she has had to battle along the way as a Black woman in the dance music industry.

The book includes contributions from other influential names including Sonique, Smokin Jo, Norman Jay MBE, Gilles Peterson MBE, Dave Haslam, Jaguar and Jamz Supernova.

Speaking about the book, DJ Paulette said “I tell my story with authenticity and humour, gathering together a stellar array of the electronic music industry’s icons, gatekeepers and fierce future forces who have joined me in this fantastic voyage to put the wider, underlying issues into perspective. It’s an epic and inspirational journey that I am excited to share with the world.”

DJ Paulette was one of two women to have a residency at Manchester’s legendary The Haçienda. She later went on to have residencies at London’s Heaven and Ministry of Sound.

Last year, DJ Paulette won the 2022 DJ Mag Lifetime Achievement Award. Revisit her set in celebration of the award at DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs awards at Manchester’s Albert Hall below.
