A new permanent Brixton mural pays homage to late MC, Ty.

The hip-hop artist, real name Benedict ‘Ty’ Chijioke, passed away in May due to complications related to COVID-19. He has been honoured in a painted mural in South London, under one of Brixton’s arches.

The mural has been organised by Pass the Torch Music Foundation, a charity that has been set up to support independent Black music artists with annual financial support in Ty’s name. Cyndi Anafo, founder of the PTMF, said: “we wanted to make sure that there was a permanent legacy piece in Brixton honouring Ty, that would be here for a considerable amount of time.”

Ty, who was lovingly dubbed the unofficial mayor of Brixton, released 5 studio albums, alongside and a string of collaborations with the likes of De La Soul, Talib Kweli, Tony Allen and Damon Albarn.
