Nubya Garcia returns with new single, ‘Lean In’: Listen

Nubya Garcia has dropped a new single, ‘Lean In’. Check it out below.

Out now, ‘Lean In’ – a nimble jazz track inspired by UK garage – is the first solo release from the saxophonist and composer since 2021.

‘Lean In’ follows the release of ‘Live at Radio City Music Hall’ – a  joint live record between Garcia and Khruangbin, recorded at the iconic New York venue.

Garcia has also recently contributed to the ‘London Brew’ album – a celebration of Miles Davies’ ‘Bitches Brew’ by figures in London’s jazz scene. In 2021, DJ Mag took a deep dive into the UK’s vibrant experimental jazz scene – you can read the full feature here.

Speaking on the release, Nubya Garcia said that the track was “inspired by the sounds of garage that I grew up around, this track is about the combination of leaning into the frenzy of life and going with the flow, letting the universe keep things moving, and trusting it’s all gonna bop along.”

Nubya Garcia is set to play a spree of live dates across Europe this summer including Turkey’s Bozcaada Jazz Festival, Germany’s Düsseldorf Festival, as well as performances at We Out Here Festival, Bozar Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels and a show at the Southbank Centre, London, with Nu Civilisation Orchestra.

In 2021, Nubya Garcia launched the short film series titled My Process – a project cured by Radio 1’s Benji Bi that gives a look into Garcia’s writing and performance techniques. You can watch the short film here.

Earlier this year, during the celebration of EFG London Jazz Festival’s 30th anniversary, DJ Mag spoke with those involved with the Chicago jazz label International Anthem and London’s Total Refreshment Centre. You can read it here.
