Gorillaz share new single, ‘Baby Queen’: Listen

Gorillaz have shared another taster of their next album, ‘Cracker Island’, out next year. Listen to ‘Baby Queen’ below.

The new single, first heard on the FIFA ’23 video game soundtrack,  is inspired by a stage-diving Thai crown princess at a 1997 Blur gig, Gorillaz’ founder Damon Albarn explained in an LA Times interview from earlier this year, NME reports.”She was only 14 at the time, and she came to see us, and due to the very specific role the royal family play in Thailand, they put a throne next to the mixing board for her to sit in, surrounded by I don’t know how many soldiers.” Albarn said.”‘Song 2’ started and she stood on her throne and stage-dived into the crowd.”

“The reason I’ve written a song about it is because I had a dream about this princess very recently,” Albarn continued.”She’d grown up and we spent time in my dream together, her as a woman.”

‘Baby Queen’ features on the tracklist for the upcoming LP, out 24th February, 2023. In August, Gorillaz shared the ‘New Gold’ single featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown. Thundercat, Stevie Nicks, Bad Bunny, Beck and Adeleye Omotayo also feature on ‘Cracker Island’. Watch the video for the title track here.

Last month, a guitar designed by Gorillaz’ Jamie Hewlett and Albarn and owned by The Cure’s Robert Smith sold at an auction for Brian Eno’s climate charity for £35,580 — five times its estimate of £7,000.
