UK sound system culture’s past, present and future to be explored at Goldsmiths event

The past, present and future of UK sound system culture is the subject of an upcoming event at Goldsmiths. 

Sound System Outernational, an initiative from researchers practitioners and the University of London college in support of sound system culture worldwide, is putting on its eighth event on Saturday, 5th November, at Goldsmiths in southeast London under the theme of “continuities and disruptions”. The reasoning programme, done in partnership with Sonic Street Technologies, will tackle three key questions: “How and why is the culture transforming, or being passed down and preserved, or being gatekept, or appropriated? What are the responsibilities of youngers and elders? What does the future hold?”

Nzinga Soundz, BASSISbikes, Jerry Lionz, Sista Lexxy, Hylu, A.P. Grimshaw and local Lewisham sound system Unit 137 will be on hand for the day, evening and afterparty’s soundtrack. There’ll be an official after-afterparty at Isla Ray Cafe with Tiny T and Lucky Cat. Pop-up record and book shops will also be on site.
