Annoincing a new editorial partnership with our good friends from The Red Telephone from Margate. Starting today, their weekly feature Five on Friday — five tracks curated by artists, selectors, and record enthusiasts from within their community.
Red Telephone have quietly built a solid community on the Kent coast, centred around a genuine love of underground music. It’s a natural fit. Thanks to the team at Red Telephone for reaching out. Looking forward to what’s ahead. We’ve shared many a long day on the beach or late nights together, most we can’t print, but brilliant music with a great crew. Each week, TRT will share 5 essentials you need to hear!
First up is James Thomson, the man behind Ornate Music, a House and Techno label he’s been running since 2008. Rooted in acid house, his sound sits somewhere between raw and soulful, and as one half of Jonno and Tommo, he’s been making records for people who take the dance floor seriously. With new music from Smoke, Polytunnel and Bohm due this year, Ornate is back in full swing after a short break.
Night Communication – Nocturne Seduction
Kicking things off with this classic slice of deep house. I first heard it on the infamous Digs & Woosh Castle Morton tape. I’ll be pulling this out for mine and Red Telephone’s very own shot-caller, Damo Bee, at our Celebrate Life party at Bar Nothing, Margate, this Saturday, where we’ll be playing timeless club sounds, hidden gems and, of course, a generous sprinkling of Italian house. Come through if you’re in the area.
Ron Trent – Cycle of Many
I often question my process for listening to new music, and this is a perfect example. I blame all the years of flicking through records to find the best bits while recording sound clips at Juno. I’m not sure how I overlooked this absolute gem, but I haven’t stopped listening to it since rediscovering it recently. Slow-mo house meets Vangelis in this sublime gem.
Declan McDermott – Why Don’t You Believe Me (DJ Nature remix)
Raw, emotive, machine soul music from Wild Bunch founding member DJ Nature, forthcoming on Jimpster’s Delusions of Grandeur imprint. I can feel the sweat dripping down the walls just listening to this. It comes with sultry female vocals in French and English, how very cosmopolitan.
Smoke – Le Haze
Nottingham’s finest and Ornate Music favourite, Nail, under his dub-soaked moniker, Smoke. This absolute floor bomb is getting a super-limited vinyl release on Ornate soon, so keep your eyes and ears peeled!
Larry Heard, Kuniyuki – Earth beats (Fingers deep mix)
A bit late to the party on this one, but it’s always reassuring to know that there’s still more amazing music from the master, Larry Heard, to be discovered. I’m not sure house music gets deeper or more emotional than this for me, while still keeping it focused on the dancefloor.
You can catch James playing alongside The Red Telephones very own Damo this weekend in Margate at the fantastic Bar Nothing.
