‘The Golden Bachelor’ Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast and Where to Watch
ABC is gearing up for the highly anticipated second season of The Golden Bachelor, and this time the spotlight is on Mel Owens.
The 66-year-old former NFL linebacker, best known for his years with the Los Angeles Rams, is ready to find love once again in the hit reality dating franchise.
Owens’ journey to becoming the Golden Bachelor hasn’t been without controversy. Back in June, just months after he was announced as the new lead, Owens sparked backlash when he joked on a podcast about “cutting” contestants over the age of 60. With the majority of his Season 2 cast being women in their sixties and seventies, Owens has since issued repeated apologies. By his own estimate, he apologized more than 20 times in the first episode alone. “It’s good because I deserved it and I had to deal with it. I explained to them sincerely, to just give me another chance,” he told USA TODAY.
Despite the rocky start, Owens is eager to prove himself. A divorcé and father of two, he is looking to find companionship and a partner to share his golden years with.
Who is Mel Owens?
Mel Owens was born and raised in Detroit, where his athletic talent showed early. After excelling at the University of Michigan, he was drafted ninth overall in the 1981 NFL Draft by the LA Rams. He played with the team until 1989 before retiring and shifting careers.
Post-football, Owens became a lawyer specializing in sports injuries. His personal life has also had ups and downs, he married, had two sons, but later went through a divorce. Now, after years as a dedicated father, he says he is ready to open his heart again.
ABC describes him as someone who wants “a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship, sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple.”
When does Season 2 premiere?
The Golden Bachelor Season 2 premieres with a two-episode special on Wednesday, September 24, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. New episodes will drop weekly every Wednesday and will also be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
ABC hasn’t confirmed the total episode count for Season 2, but if the first season is a guide, viewers can expect nine episodes, possibly followed by a wedding special.
