Sam Neill’s Final On-Screen Performance Set for ‘The Legend Of Zelda’

The late Sam Neill is reportedly set to have his final on-screen performance in the upcoming Legend Of Zelda film adaptation. Sony first announced in 2023 that it was joining forces with Nintendo to co-finance a Zelda film, with T.S. Nowlin penning the script and Wes Ball onboard to direct.

The movie is inspired by the hit Legend of Zelda gaming franchise, created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, though specific plot details and the full cast list have remained largely under wraps. Recently, it was confirmed that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth would be taking on the lead role of Link, with Bo Bragason cast as Princess Zelda.

Following these announcements, further details regarding the ensemble cast have emerged, including the casting of Australian actor Uli Latukefu as the villain Ganondorf. According to Deadline, sources indicate that the Jurassic Park star will feature in the film, marking what is expected to be his final on-screen appearance. Sony has yet to confirm the reports or disclose the specific character Neill will portray.

Neill’s death was confirmed by his family on July 13. While no cause was initially provided, his representative Philip Grenz later confirmed that the actor passed away from pneumonia. Neill had previously shared his journey with blood cancer, noting in 2022 that he was cancer-free.

Throughout his illustrious career, Neill became a household name through iconic roles in Event Horizon, The Piano, and the hit series Peaky Blinders. His most globally recognized performance remains that of Dr. Alan Grant in 1993’s Jurassic Park, a role he reprised in Jurassic Park III and 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion.

The Legend Of Zelda film is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on May 7, 2027. The cast also reportedly includes Yvonne Strahovski and Dichen Lachman. Since Neill’s passing, industry legends including Steven Spielberg and Laura Dern have paid tribute to their long-time colleague and friend.
