Rob Base, ‘It Takes Two’ Rapper, Dies Aged 59
Rob Base, the influential rapper and one half of the iconic hip-hop duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has died at the age of 59. The news was confirmed via an official statement on his Instagram account, which noted that the artist passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, following a private battle with cancer.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement read. “Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”
Born Robert Ginyard in Harlem in 1967, Base rose to prominence alongside his childhood friend and collaborator, DJ E-Z Rock. The duo became instrumental in bridging the gap between hip-hop and the mainstream, most notably with their 1988 anthem ‘It Takes Two’. The track, which sampled Lyn Collins’ 1972 song ‘Think (About It)’, became a global phenomenon, blending rap, house, and pop sensibilities to reach Number Three on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart.
The song’s enduring legacy is evidenced by its frequent sampling by major artists, including Drake, Snoop Dogg, and the Black Eyed Peas. DJ E-Z Rock, whose real name was Rodney ‘Skip’ Bryce, passed away in 2014 due to complications from diabetes.
Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from across the music industry. DJ Jazzy Jeff honored the late rapper, writing, “Rest Well My Brother,” while Fat Joe expressed his condolences, stating, “Love Rob I’m so sorry.”
Base is survived by his children, De’Jene Ginyard and Robert Ginyard Jr. His contribution to the evolution of electronic rap fusion and his role in bringing hip-hop to a wider audience remain a cornerstone of his musical legacy.
