Olivia Rodrigo Clarifies Relationship with Robert Smith Regarding New Single ‘Drop Dead’
A Musical Connection
Olivia Rodrigo’s latest single, ‘Drop Dead’, has sparked significant conversation due to its lyrical nod to The Cure. The track, which serves as the lead single from her upcoming third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, features the line: “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’ / And I know why he wrote them now that you’re standing right here.”
While the reference is clear, Rodrigo recently clarified in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music that she actually failed to play the specific track for Robert Smith, despite the two having spent time together in the studio. “Oh my god I actually don’t know if I played it for him, he might hear it today,” she admitted. “I played him a bunch of other songs on the album, I don’t know why I didn’t think to play this one for him though I should.”

A Budding Friendship
The relationship between the pop star and the post-punk legend has been a highlight of recent Music News. The pair famously performed together during Rodrigo’s headline set at Glastonbury 2025, where they delivered renditions of ‘Just Like Heaven’ and ‘Friday I’m In Love’. Smith has since spoken fondly of their collaborative sessions, noting that he enjoyed “a couple of memorable nights in the studio” with the singer.
Rodrigo also shared an anecdote about a custom t-shirt she wore during their Glastonbury performance. The shirt featured the lyrics to ‘Just Like Heaven’, but Smith added his own touch with a Sharpie, writing “Or do you?” at the bottom. “I was like kind of freaking out and I was like whatever, I’m just going to put it on and honestly it’s like my favourite outfit I’ve ever worn,” she said.
Looking Ahead
Rodrigo gave ‘Drop Dead’ its live debut during a surprise appearance at Coachella, following its release just a day prior. The song marks the beginning of a new chapter for the artist, who has previously cited a wide range of influences, from pop-punk to grunge, in her music production. As she continues to evolve, her appreciation for legends like Smith remains a cornerstone of her artistic journey.
