Ellen DeGeneres Pays Heartfelt Tribute After Teen Fan With Heart Condition Dies at 19
Ellen DeGeneres is mourning the loss of Tayt Andersen, the young fan she once jokingly called her “only boyfriend.”
Andersen, 19, who had been battling serious health challenges since childhood, passed away on Friday, Sept. 26, following a fight with cancer.
DeGeneres, 67, shared an emotional video message just hours after the news of his passing broke. “We had a very special guest on the show several times, and his name is Tayt,” she said. “He thought I was his girlfriend, so I told him he was my boyfriend – which shocked my wife. He was a very special little human being who brought joy, life, and laughter into every room he entered. I will miss him.” The video tribute closed with a montage of their many moments together on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Tayt’s mother, Chrissy Becker, expressed her gratitude to the former talk show host in the comments section of Ellen’s post. “We love you so much. Thank you for being his girlfriend – you gave him so much strength ❤️,” she wrote.
Earlier that day, Andersen’s family announced his death on Instagram. Posting a series of black-and-white photos of Tayt and his mother during his final moments, the caption revealed the heartbreak they endured. “Our hearts are absolutely shattered as we share the news we never wanted to write: Our sweet, strong warrior, Tayt, was released from his bodily prison early this morning, at 1:30 a.m. CT, surrounded by the fierce love of his family,” the message read.
The family reflected on his final days, explaining that he battled an infection and suffered pain but eventually passed peacefully. “Yesterday, we spent the day calling and FaceTiming family so they could say their goodbyes. We made sure to get his handprint, watched his favorite movies, read his favorite stories. We knew Tayt’s time was limited, but we honestly just weren’t ready to lose him,” the statement said. They concluded by asking for prayers and privacy: “There are truly no words to describe this pain; we are just moving through this painful process, grateful for every moment we had with our amazing boy.”
Tayt’s health struggles had defined much of his young life. Born with half a heart, he underwent 12 surgeries before the age of 9. At 10, he received a life-saving heart transplant, only to later be diagnosed with post-transplant lymphoma in his teenage years. His battle continued when, in 2024 at just 18, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. By June 2025, the disease had spread aggressively to his pelvis, spine, abdomen, chest, and neck, and doctors gave him only months to live. A GoFundMe page was set up to support his medical care and family needs.
Despite his health struggles, Tayt became a beloved figure on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He first appeared in January 2013 when Ellen, learning he called her his “girlfriend,” declared him her “only boyfriend.” Over the years, he returned multiple times, including a memorable 2015 episode where he proudly announced, “I got myself a new heart!”
Through his resilience, charm, and the bond he shared with Ellen, Tayt touched countless lives. His story became one of courage, love, and light, even in the face of relentless challenges.
