Duran Duran have revealed that the secret to their remarkable longevity in the music industry—spanning nearly five decades—is rooted in a simple, egalitarian approach to their finances. By ensuring that all income is split equally among the members, the band has successfully navigated the internal tensions that have caused the dissolution of countless other groups.
In a recent interview with ITV News, frontman Simon Le Bon discussed how the band has maintained its core lineup, which features himself alongside John Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Nick Rhodes. According to Le Bon, the financial structure is a cornerstone of their harmony. “We like each other, we like working together. We rely on each other for musical ideas, as well. We split all the income equally; it doesn’t matter if you write something or if you don’t write on it, you get an equal share of the publishing,” he explained.
This transparent approach serves a dual purpose: it fosters a collaborative environment where only the best material makes the cut, and it eliminates the resentment that often stems from financial disparities. “That way, everybody is happy and only the best material gets on the album. It means there’s no resentment for financial reasons. I don’t know how many other bands do that,” Le Bon added.
The band’s commitment to their status as a headline act remains as firm as their financial agreements. Addressing recent speculation regarding a potential appearance at Glastonbury, Le Bon clarified that the group is not interested in anything less than a prime slot. “Well, we want to – but not in a disco tent at 3pm, which is what we were offered,” he stated. “We want the right slot… We shouldn’t be below anybody on the bill. So, we’ll hold out because we’re a headline act – that’s all there is to it.”
As they prepare for their upcoming headline show at BST Hyde Park 2026 and a subsequent UK arena tour, the band continues to prove that their collaborative spirit and professional integrity remain the driving forces behind their enduring success.
