‘Disclosure Day’ Review: Steven Spielberg Returns to Sci-Fi Form

Having invented the modern summer blockbuster with Jaws more than 50 years ago, Steven Spielberg has never left the public consciousness. The American director remains arguably the world’s most famous filmmaker and a profound influence on contemporary visionaries like Christopher Nolan. With Disclosure Day, Spielberg returns to the fertile territory of science fiction, delivering an exciting, probing, and full-bodied feature that only he could craft.

The narrative opens at a wrestling match, where would-be whistleblower Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) attempts to trade a cache of mysterious data for the freedom of his girlfriend, Jane (Eve Hewson). The exchange is overseen by the shadowy Wardex agency, represented by the delightfully villainous Colin Firth. When the deal collapses, Daniel and Jane are forced into hiding with the assistance of former Wardex operative Hugo (Colman Domingo). Simultaneously, in Kansas City, weather reporter Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) experiences a terrifying morning: she begins reading minds, speaking fluent Korean, and suffering from inexplicable seizures involving an unknown, clicking dialect.

As Margaret realizes she is being hunted, she flees toward the rural safe house where Daniel is hiding. The film masterfully channels the paranoid energy of 1970s conspiracy thrillers like The Parallax View and Three Days Of The Condor. While the first act takes its time building tension, the payoff in the latter half is immense. The film features a high-stakes car chase and a nerve-shredding train sequence that stands as one of the most impressive cinematic set-pieces of the year.

While some viewers may find the conclusion leans into sentimentality or wish for a tighter runtime, the film remains a triumph of craft. Emily Blunt delivers a standout performance, anchoring the film’s more supernatural elements with genuine emotional weight. Ultimately, Disclosure Day proves that even when operating outside of his most iconic franchises, Spielberg remains the undisputed master of the blockbuster.
