Björk Launches Major New Audiovisual Exhibition in Iceland

Björk has opened a major new exhibition in her native Iceland, a project defined by three deeply personal, large-scale audiovisual installations. The exhibition, which debuted at The National Gallery of Iceland in Reykjavík on May 30, offers an intimate look into the artist’s creative evolution.

At the heart of the installation are two reimagined audio works, ‘Ancestress’ and ‘Sorrowful Soil’, both originally featured on her 2022 album Fossora. These pieces have been adapted for a museum context, designed to honor the memory of the singer’s late mother. ‘Ancestress’ explores themes of grief and renewal through cinematic landscapes, while ‘Sorrowful Soil’ is presented as an immersive nine-part piece utilizing 30 individual speaker channels to integrate voice and architecture.

The exhibition also provides a rare glimpse into the artist’s future, featuring a new piece of music from an upcoming album expected in 2027. This installation promises to offer fans a preview of her next creative chapter through a blend of film and immersive technology.

In a statement, Björk noted that she served as creative director, working alongside painter Natalia Kleszczewska and graphic designer Natalie Liu to guide the project’s visual identity. “My role was bringing in the singer-songwriter tradition, where emotionally precise things happen inside the structure of a song,” she explained. “I guided colour palettes, textures and the environments the music happens in.”

The exhibition also includes a companion piece titled ‘Metamorphlings’ in Gallery 4, designed by longtime collaborator James Merry, which explores sculpture and organic transformation. Furthermore, the project features a collaboration with Bottega Veneta, highlighting the intersection of fashion and experimental performance.

The exhibition is set to remain open until September 20, with additional technical support provided by Apple and AIAIAI. This opening follows the announcement of a unique solar eclipse rave scheduled for August 12 in Víðistaðatún, which will feature a DJ set from Björk alongside performances from Arca and local talent.
