Björk Launches Immersive New Exhibition in Iceland
Björk has opened a major new exhibition in her native Iceland, presenting a collection of three deeply personal, large-scale audiovisual installations. The exhibition, which debuted at The National Gallery of Iceland in Reykjavík on May 30, offers an intimate look into the artist’s creative evolution and emotional landscape.
A Journey Through Grief and Innovation
At the heart of the exhibition are two reimagined audio works, ‘Ancestress’ and ‘Sorrowful Soil’. Originally featured on her 2022 album Fossora, these pieces have been adapted for a theatrical, museum-scale experience. ‘Ancestress’ serves as a ritualistic meditation on grief and renewal, accompanied by cinematic visuals of Iceland’s remote valleys. Meanwhile, ‘Sorrowful Soil’ is presented as an immersive nine-part installation, utilizing 30 individual speaker channels to transmit the voices of the Hamrahlíð Choir, designed in partnership with Genelec to harmonize voice and architecture.
The installation also features a brand-new piece of music, providing a glimpse into a forthcoming album expected in 2027. This new work promises to guide fans through the next chapter of her career, blending film, sound, and immersive technology.
Collaborative Vision and Future Projects
Björk served as the creative director for the project, working alongside painter Natalia Kleszczewska and graphic designer Natalie Liu. “My role was bringing in the singer-songwriter tradition, where emotionally precise things happen inside the structure of a song,” she explained. “I guided colour palettes, textures and the environments the music happens in.”
The exhibition also includes a companion piece titled ‘Metamorphlings’ in Gallery 4, designed by longtime collaborator James Merry, which explores themes of transformation and organic sculpture. The project is further enhanced by a collaboration with Bottega Veneta, featuring a custom look worn by the artist.
Tickets for the exhibition are available now, with the installation remaining open until September 20. This launch follows the announcement of a unique solar eclipse rave scheduled for August 12 in Víðistaðatún, Hafnarfjörður, which will feature a DJ set from Björk alongside performances from Arca and local talents.
