V/A – Family Affair Vol. 5
You don’t build a legacy by screwing around — and Razor-N-Tape, the New York label founded by Aaron Dae and JKriv in 2012, has built one of the best, with a wide-ranging house-leaning discography that makes room for plenty of funk, R&B, global grooves and all manner of edit tomfoolery. The latest edition of R-N-T’s ‘Family Affair’ cuts a typically wide swath. There’s the 303-meets-sax stomp of Peter Matson & Stuart Bogie’s ‘Bogies Acid Bet’, the dreamy breakbeat of Marina Trench’s ‘Icy’, the popping ’80s-style electrofunk of Gus Pirelli & Andre Espeut’s ‘Step Inside The Music’, the stripped-down Anoraak edit of South African artist Mpharanyana’s 1979 stormer ‘Disco’ and…well, you get the idea. Given the scope, it’s possible you won’t like every cut on the comp — but, chances are, you’ll absolutely love most of them.
