The Sugarhill Gang share new ‘Rapper’s Delight’ video celebrating 45th anniversary: Watch

The Sugarhill Gang have marked the 45th anniversary of their groundbreaking classic ‘Rapper’s Delight’ with a new video.

Created by Colombian-Chilean filmmaker duo Yere Sara Serna and Jko Sánchez, the animated visual has been described as “a celebration of not just this hugely influential track, but the entire hip hop culture that has grown from it”, according to hotpress.com.

Originally released in September 1979, ‘Rapper’s Delight’ was one of the first hip-hop songs to gain mainstream popularity when it broke into the US Billboard Hot 100. It also shot to number three in the UK and number one in Canada.

The track, which interpolates Chic’s ‘Good Times’, was preserved in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2011 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

‘Rapper’s Delight’ has been sampled or interpolated by countless artists over the years, including Pitbull, Beastie Boys, Lil’ Kim and many more.
