Stone Roses bassist Mani to be honoured with permanent Manchester mural

A crowdfunder has been launched to commemorate late Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield with a permanent mural in his hometown of Manchester.

The fundraiser has a goal of £10,000, which will go toward the creation of a mural in tribute to the Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist, who died in November at the age of 63. Any remaining funds will be donated to a cancer charity “close to Mani’s heart”, Maggie’s Manchester, which supported the musician and his wife Imelda during her cancer treatment. At the time of publication, the crowdfunder has raised over £7,000.

The mural will be created by Manchester-based street artist Pic.One.Art, whose mural of Oasis’ Noel and Liam Gallagher outside Sifters Records in Burnage became a local landmark. 

Local art non-profit GRIT Studios is spearheading logistics for the mural, which will be created in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, where Mani spent much of his childhood.

According to the description in the crowdfunder, Greg Mounfield, Mani’s brother, has lent the campaign his support and “has facilitated a prominent large wall space for the mural and chosen the design.”

The fundraiser’s organisers also stated that inspiration for the mural came from Ian Brown’s eulogy to Mani at Manchester Cathedral during his funeral in December last year, in which he said he wanted to see a 50-foot statue of Mani erected.

Mani died in his sleep on 20th November due to respiratory issues caused by long-standing emphysema. His brother confirmed the news on Facebook at the time, which arrived just over a week after Mani had announced plans for a UK speaking tour about his career to take place this year.
