Spotify to Introduce Labels for AI-Generated Artist Profiles
Spotify is taking a significant step toward transparency by introducing new labels to identify AI-generated music and artist profiles on its platform. Starting in mid-September, an “AI Persona” badge will be displayed on artist profiles that the streaming giant determines are created by artificial intelligence rather than human performers. This label will also be visible in search results and alongside individual tracks within playlists.
In a recent statement, Spotify emphasized that the initiative is designed to foster trust between artists and their listeners as the line between human-made and machine-generated content becomes increasingly blurred. “True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity,” the company noted. The platform has made “Artist Identity & Trust” a top priority this year, following the launch of tools like Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, AI Credits, and Artist Profile Protection.
The identification process will rely on a combination of direct information provided by artists and Spotify’s own internal verification checks. As of August 11, the platform launched a dedicated portal where artists can voluntarily disclose if their profile represents an AI persona. Spotify has confirmed that it will also actively review profiles to identify those that appear to represent non-human identities. For artists who believe their profile has been incorrectly flagged, there will be an appeals process to rectify the classification.
This move arrives as part of a broader industry-wide effort to manage the rapid rise of AI in the music sector. Last year, Spotify removed approximately 75 million AI-generated “spam” tracks from its library. Similarly, other major streaming services, including Apple Music competitors like Deezer, TIDAL, and Traxsource, have implemented their own measures to identify, label, or restrict AI-generated content to maintain the integrity of their catalogs.
