Ricardo Villalobos taps Underground Resistance, A Guy Called Gerald, more for Sun Ra reworks compilation
Ricardo Villalobos has tapped Underground Resistance, A Guy Called Gerald and more for a new Sun Ra remix compilation. ‘When There Is No Sun’ will drop on 27th March via Omni Sound.
Described as a “global recording project”, the compilation brings together forward-thinking electronic producers to reinterpret the universe of Sun Ra. Other contributors include house veteran Chez Damier, Parisian producer Ben Vedren, drum & bass stalwart Calibre, along with SHE Spells Doom and Barış K.
All tracks are reimagined from Sun Ra Arkestra’s ‘Living Sky’ instrumental project, and the Sun Ra spoken-word album, ‘Words Are My Music’, with vocal contributions from Anthony Joseph, Mahogany L. Browne, Abiodun Oyewole, Tunde Adebimpe, and Tara Middleton.
You can pre-order the album here.
Below you can listen to the first track, ‘When Angels Speak’, which first appeared on Sun Ra’s legendary 1966 LP of the same name.
Widely considered amongst the 20th century’s most groundbreaking and influential names in jazz and electronic music, poetry and spirituality, Sun Ra’s musical and literary-performance universe was focused on the idea that many of society’s dominant narratives create prisons of the mind.
Alongside the forthcoming 12-track release, a number of special release events have been announced across the world. Dates include a live stream from the Pan African Space Station in Cape Town, South Africa (17th March), Villalobos and Damier at Open Ground in Wuppertal, Germany (20th March), Sun Ra Arkestra and Damier at Nublu, New York City (10th April), and Saul Williams with Underground Resistance at Dekmantel Festival in Amsterdam (31st July).
