Reports of needle spiking at Montréal festival ÎLESONIQ sparks police investigation

Montréal police are investigating reports of needle spiking at ÎleSoniq festival earlier this month.

Six people reported feeling “a sharp sting in the back of their bodies while in a crowd” at the festival, which ran at Parc Jean-Drapeau on 9th and 10th August, according to a Montréal Police Service (SPVM) press statement, via Resident Advisor. Police say the victims, a mix of men and women, said they felt dizzy after feeling the prick of the needle.

ÎleSoniq shared a statement on social media on 15th August confirming knowledge of the reports and the team’s “full cooperation” with SPVM.

“The safety of our attendees is our highest priority, and we take these incidents very seriously”, ÎleSoniq’s statement read. “Our teams are working closely with the police, on-site medical staff, and a dedicated prevention group to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. We understand how concerning these incidents are, and we are sincerely sorry.”

SPVM did not provide further details on the investigation and could not confirm if the reported spiking incidents were related. Possible additional victims from ÎleSoniq who have not yet come forward are encouraged to do so, with the option to report anonymously. You can find more information here.

This year’s ÎleSoniq line-up featured the likes of Steve Aoki, Sara Landry, Alesso, Chase & Status, LP Giobbi, Sofi Tukker and more.

Reports of spiking incidents at music events have been making headlines in recent years. In late 2021, there was a string of investigations at UK clubs, and this past June, 145 people who attended events as part of France’s annual country-wide Fête de la Musique reported being attacked by needles. 12 suspects were arrested, the Guardian reports.
