Povoa – NPT
While it wouldn’t be incorrect to simply file Povoa’s 99CTS debut under ‘dancefloor bangers’ and duly rinse it till the cows come home, that would somewhat undersell the quality on offer. ‘OK’ opens with aquatic murmurs that belie the devastation to come, its flabby overdriven bass slapping like a bellyflop from the high board. ‘WATCH YOUR PIN’ and ‘HERSELF’ deliver the kind of souped-up contemporary hardgroove that fans of fellow Parisian, Jaymie Silk, will greatly approve of. The former pairs its thundering kicks with clucking, mangled vox and an electrifying djembe rhythm, while the latter adds squelchy synth wiggles and staccato laser blasts. ‘FERAL’ finishes on a punchy electro vibe — a feast of swirling, rubbery tom rolls and whiplash snares.
