Paul Kalkbrenner samples Depeche Mode on new single, ‘Dreaming On’: Listen

Paul Kalkbrenner has shared new track, ‘Dreaming On’, fitted with a sample of Depeche Mode. Listen to it below. 

‘Dreaming On’ lifts the central guitar lick from Depeche Mode’s 2001 single, ‘Dream On’, and repurposes it for a driving, hypnotising techno track.

Depeche Mode are renowned for their reluctance to clear samples beyond official remixes, but for the first time ever, they’ve made an exception for Kalkbrenner.

‘Dreaming On’ is due to appear on Kalkbrenner’s forthcoming album, ‘The Essence’ (due 10th October), his first LP in seven years. According to press materials, the album has been built from tracks recorded throughout those years, including some collaborative tracks, which is a first for a producer who usually works alone.

Earlier this month, it was announced that a Berlin football club would be renaming its stadium after Kalkbrenner. 

Next month will also see the worldwide cinematic release of Depeche Mode’s concert film, M, which documented three shows the band played at Mexico City’s Foro Sol Stadium in September 2023 in support of their 2023 album, ‘Memento Mori’.
