New Book, Beyond the Drop, Explores the Evolution of Sound Design

A new book exploring how sound design has shaped electronic music over the past 30 years has been published by Routledge. Written by author, producer, and audio designer Rick Snoman, Sound Design and Synthesis for Electronic and Modern Music: Beyond the Drop draws on both hands-on experience and technical knowledge to explore the intersection of synthesis, performance, and engineering, which he defines as “the true language of electronic music.”

Designed for producers and sound artists at all levels, the chapters focus on sound synthesis, dynamic processing, spatial and textural enhancement, distortion, and much more. Beyond the Drop also explores sound behaviour and the use of modulation and movement in place of traditional chord progressions, offering a comprehensive guide for those looking to master the craft of modern production.

This release follows a trend of insightful literature regarding the history and technical evolution of the genre. Earlier this year, former DJ Mag features editor Lauren Martin published Aftershock, a book detailing the history and cultural impact of the UK dubstep scene. Additionally, in 2024, Ben Murphy released a work exploring the intricate relationship between electronic music and field recordings.
