Ministry of Sound to undergo major renovation ahead of 35th anniversary
Ministry of Sound is undergoing major renovation work ahead of its 35th anniversary celebrations.
The London club’s main room, The Box, will be closed throughout January 2026 while the refurbishment is underway. Its long-standing Martin Audio sound system is set to be dismantled and replaced with a bespoke four-point KV2 system, featuring KV2 SL412 top speakers alongside VHD2.21 and VHD2.16 subwoofers.
The Box’s layout will also be altered, with the DJ booth set to be lowered to the the level of the dancefloor. It will also be redesigned as a modular structure that can be set-up in multiple ways, including for 360-degree shows. A new elevated backstage area will surround the booth, while the room’s overall capacity is set to increase by around 200 people.
Other plans include the installation of a large overhead lighting structure featuring LED bars, video screens and reflective metal frameworks. The club said that it hoped this new design, led by Lucid Creates, could allow for a more immersive lighting and video system.
“The Box has always set benchmarks, particularly around sound,” Ministry of Sound director Matt Long said. “This renovation allows us to reset that standard for the next generation to continue evolving the space without losing its identity.”
“To ensure the design feels cutting-edge whilst still retaining its edge, we’ve leant heavily into industrial textures and forms to inform the overall look of the space – steering away from an overly clean, overly manicured aesthetic,” Chris Carr, founder of Lucid Creates, added. “The result is something that will still feel distinctively ‘The Box’ but in a really interesting and imaginative way.”
Ministry of Sound’s 35th anniversary celebrations are set to run through 2026, with The Box reopening for a pair of special relaunch events on 30th and 31st January. Those dates will include a back-to-back between Kölsch and Pete Tong, as well as a set from Lauren Lo Sung, among other guests.
