Madlib sues former manager Eothen “Egon” Alapatt for “pervasive mismanagement”

Revered hip-hop producer Madlib has filed a lawsuit against his former manager, Eothen ‘Egon’ Alapatt, accusing him of being “engaged in rank self-dealing, concealing information from and repeatedly breaching his duties to Madlib.”

The suit goes on to allege that Alapatt, who was also general manager of Stones Throw from 2000-2011 and founder of sub-label Now-Again Records, was “engaged in rank self-dealing, concealing information from and repeatedly breaching his duties to Madlib.

Finally, Madlib also accused Alapatt of exercising too much control over Madlib’s finances while refusing to provide transparent accounting records. “A forensic accounting commissioned by Madlib revealed several accounting irregularities,” the suit continued. “As well as a lack of any backup documentation for, among other things, payments to Alapatt, codefendant Jeffrey Carlson and others as ‘consulting,’ ‘commissions,’ ‘fees’ or ‘reimbursements’ (totalling in the several hundred thousands of dollars).”

Alapatt has yet to respond to Madlib’s claims.

Separately, MF DOOM’s widow, Jasmine Dumile Thompson, also filed suit against Alapatt last October. According to her suit, she has the right to 31 of the late rapper’s notebooks that are currently in Alapatt’s possession. Attorneys for Alapatt dismissed the claims as “baseless and libellous.”
