Ken Ishii – Autopilot

Ken Ishii has compiled three tracks inspired by a long-haul flight for his latest release on Rekids’ techno-focused sub label. And it shows — the Japanese techno titan barely changes BPM from EP title track to ‘Sunset Flight’ and ‘Grid Bounce’. Throughout, relentless drum machines bang the skull while Ishii’s trademark glitches fire between beats; rusty squeaks of synth and a clever layering of cymbals on ‘Grid Bounce’ create a vigorous cut. There isn’t much variation across this 16-odd minute assault of sound, though it reflects well the stamina required for lengthy travel. Maybe pop a paracetamol before hitting play.
