Joy Orbison shares new single, ‘do it again’: Listen

Joy Orbison has released his new single, ‘do it again’, via XL Recordings.

The new single looks to the producer’s lifelong passion for ‘80s new wave and ‘90s electronica. ‘do it again’ is built on the backbone of a driving beat and a series of chopped and looped vocal samples that call to mind the hypnotising vocoder sounds of Laurie Anderson’s ‘O Superman’.

In an Instagram post announcing the single, Joy O, aka Peter O’Grady, wrote: “‘play it again’ started in London, but it really began to take shape while I was out in San Francisco.”

“I recorded some synths at Empire Studios in San Fran,” he continued, “and I think the drums came together on the flight home, elbow deep in those mini bottles of wine and newly procured sleeping aids.

“This track is going to be part of something bigger, but I got impatient waiting for that to come together (my fault). I just really wanted to have this one out there. This is where my head’s at right now, and there’s a lot more to come.”

‘do it again’ follows ‘bastard’, a collaboration with prolific alt-rap star Joe James that was released back in January.

The two singles bookend a busy year of festivals for O’Grady, including appearances at Glastonbury, Houghton, No Bounds and more, plus the release of his Overmono and Skiifall collab ‘Lippy’ in June.
