Jessy Lanza returns to Hyperdub with new single and video, ‘Slapped By My Life’: Watch
Jessy Lanza is back on Hyperdub with a new single and video titled ‘Slapped By My Life’. Watch the video below.
The new single, co-produced by Pearson Sound, follows the Canadian artist’s 2023 album ‘Love Hallucination‘, her fourth LP on Kode9’s label. It was created while Jessy Lanza’s husband and frequent collaborator Winston Chase, who directs and stars in the new music video, was undergoing cancer treatment.
“I wrote ‘Slapped By My Life’ while my husband Winston was going through chemotherapy”, Lanza wrote in a press statement. “The treatment cycle was relentless and he spent most of the time bedridden, so while he slept I wrote this song for him. It’s been challenging to find the space to be creative since cancer came into our lives, but I knew this song would make Winston smile and that was motivation enough… I was desperate to feel something other than sadness, to escape my mind and live inside the music, even for a few minutes.”
Lanza shared a dedication for the single: “I dedicate this song to my husband Winston and to all the caregivers who give us hope along the way. You are the ones who keep the world turning.”
Winston Chase also posted a clip of the new video on his Instagram with the note: “Feels good to be back making videos. Been a tough couple years. More soon.” In a press statement, he added, “My journey through cancer has been marked with insensitivity and sorrow so harrowing it borders on comedy. I’d often find myself between laughter and despair, and I wanted the video for Jessy’s song to reflect that feeling.”
The vinyl and digital edition of ‘Slapped By My Life’ single will be released by Hyperdub on 12th September with the original mix and an ‘Existential Mix’.
