Flying Lotus announces new EP, ‘BIG MAMA’, on Brainfeeder

Flying Lotus is releasing a new EP on Brainfeeder.

Arriving on 6th March, ‘BIG MAMA’ is described as a “thirteen-plus-minute stream-of-consciousness outpouring” without loops, where seven tracks flow into one continuous composition and “every bar is unique”.

‘BIG MAMA’ was put together in New Zealand over the course of two months – following the completion of his feature film Ash – and saw FlyLo harness an arsenal of software synths to explore FM, wavetable and granular synthesis.

“I wanted it to be free and feel alive. I think that was a big intention of mine with this record, just to think about it more like sound design and make something that felt unpredictable and maximal”, he said in a press release.

The EP serves as a “spiritual successor” to 2010’s ‘Pattern+Grid World’ EP, featuring artwork from Christopher Ian Macfarlane and taking inspiration from non-musical sources such as the Ren & Stimpy Show and The Simpsons. Pre-save ‘BIG MAMA’ here.

Last year, Flying Lotus aka worked on the soundtrack for sci-fi horror film, Ash, which revolves around a space captain who wakes up alone to find her crew murdered. FlyLo both directed and appeared in the film as a character named Davis.

Ash marked the US artist’s second directorial turn following 2017 body horror Kuso. He also soundtracked LeSean Thomas and Takeshi Satou’s Yasuke, a six-part anime series released via Netflix in 2022.
