Debit announces new album, ‘Desaceleradas’, on Modern Love
Debit will release her new album, ‘Desaceleradas’, via Modern Love on 7th November. Listen to the first single, ‘La Ronda y el sonidero’, below.
The Monterrey, Mexico-born, New York-based artist’s new album offers a unique interpretation of cumbia rebajada, a hometown take on the Afro-Latin dance genre that originated in Colombia in the 19th century. As the rebajada origin story goes, in the ’90s, a Monterrey selector and ‘sonidero’ [DJ] Gabriel Dueñez had been playing cumbia records for hours at a street party when, suddenly, his turntable overheated, causing the music to warp and run at inconsistent half-speeds. Undeterred, the crowd continued dancing to this slowed-down style.
Cumbia rebajada developed over the ensuring years, with Sonido Dueñez distributing mixtapes that reflected that woozy sound at markets. Debit – aka Delia Beatriz – used the first two of these tapes as the jump-off point for her new album, re-voicing them via an ARP 2600 synthesiser.
“The goal was not to sample,” said Debit, who also used her mother’s accordion in the productions, “but to engage in conversation.”
‘Desaceleradas’ follows 202’s ‘The Long Count’, which saw Debit exploring ancient Mayan flutes and machine learning techniques to create an album of electro-acoustic experimental music. Revisit her interview about the album and her mix for DJ Mag’s Recognise series here.
