De La Soul to re-release rare 1994 EP featuring A Tribe Called Quest
De La Soul have announced the re-release of a rare 1994 EP featuring a collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest.
Originally issued in a limited pressing of 500 copies, ‘Clear Lake Auditorium’ was distributed exclusively to selected DJs as part of the promotion of De La Soul’s third album, 1993’s ‘Buhloone Mindstate’.
The hip-hop pioneers took to Instagram on Friday (10th January) to announce that the four-track EP will be getting an official release in March this year.
“Originally pressed in 1994 as an exclusive promotional release for select DJs, ‘Clear Lake Audiotorium’ has achieved near-mythical status among collectors,” De La Soul wrote in the statement.
“The album includes four tracks from the ‘Buhloone Mindstate’ era, including two rare collaborations: ‘sh.Fe.Mc’s’ featuring A Tribe Called Quest, and ‘Stix & Stonz’, with contributions from Tito of The Fearless Four, Grandmaster Caz, LA Sunshine of the Treacherous Three and Prince Whipper Whip.”
“It’s incredible to see how our music continues to resonate,” De La Soul’s Posdnuos added in a statement. “From remixes and reissues to live performances, we’re excited to share this journey with fans old and new.”
‘Clear Lake Audiotorium’ will be available to stream digitally on 7th March. Fans can pre-order the digital version and limited-edition CD and vinyl here.
Later this week, De La Soul are set to perform a pay-what-you-want concert at New York City’s Lincoln Center. The group’s first show in 16 months will celebrate their decision to release their catalog on streaming services whilst paying tribute to late member David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur.
Last year, De La Soul released a 35th anniversary digital edition of their debut album, ‘3 Feet High and Rising’, featuring digitally unreleased versions of ‘Freedom Of Speak (We Got Three Minutes)’, ‘Ain’t Hip to be Labelled a Hippie’, ‘Jenifa Taught Me (12” Version)’ and more.
