Daphne Oram’s centenary celebrated in compilation featuring TAAHLIAH, Deena Abdelwahed, more
The centenary of BBC Radiophonic Workshop co-founder Daphne Oram’s birth is set to be celebrated on a new compilation.
Put together to honour the legacy of the legendary composer’s work, the 10-track ‘vari/ations – Ode To Oram’ features a selection of new cuts from contemporary artists, which were made using sound samples taken from over 280 of Oram’s audio tapes — some of which have never been heard before.
Deena Abdelwahed, TAAHLIAH, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Arushi Jain and Marta Salogni are among those who have contributed music to the release. You can listen to Fanni Tutti’s track, ‘Tributum’, below.
“It’s been such a privilege to work with Daphne’s sounds,” she said in a statement. “She’s been an inspiration for so many years. I’m proud to be a part of this project that marks her centenary and in acknowledgement of her influence, remarkable experimental vision and unique approach to the concept of sound, which has been key to the development of electronic music.”
Oram passed away in 2003 at the age of 77.
‘vari/ations – Ode To Oram’ is set for release via Nonclassical on 14th November.
Earlier this year, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop sample library was made available for the first time.
