Cyma Forma Unveils RND: A One-Button Synth With Four Billion Sounds
A new one-button synthesizer, designed to push the boundaries of generative sound design, has officially hit the market. Capable of producing an astonishing 4.29 billion distinct sounds, the RND synth is the latest release from Paris-based boutique electronic instrument company Cyma Forma.
The instrument was developed with significant creative input from the acclaimed French artist Bambounou. The hardware itself is striking, featuring a translucent amber finish and a minimalist interface centered around a single, large button that serves as the primary engine for the device’s creative output.
Each press of the button triggers one of 4,294,967,296 possible musical ideas. These sounds are drawn from a diverse array of eight synthesis engines, including subtractive, FM, acid, noise, speech, Karplus-Strong, supersaw, and additive synthesis. Each generated sound is paired with a unique, unrepeatable rhythmic sequence, ensuring that no two interactions with the device are ever the same.
Beyond its generative capabilities, the RND is equipped with robust connectivity options, including four-track audio output via USB-C, four-channel MIDI in and out with nine distinct MIDI modes, and analogue sync connections. Users can further refine their patches by selecting from 20 different musical scales and five unique filter types.
Cyma Forma describes the RND as an “inspiration machine.” In a statement regarding the release, the company noted, “If you want to make music but don’t know where to start, or if you’re stuck in the middle of a track of yours, or if you just want to space out, just press the button. You’ll definitely find something interesting.”
