Christchurch Club Hide Announces Closure After Seven Years

Christchurch club Hide is due to close down this month, marking the end of a significant chapter for the city’s nightlife scene. The team behind the venue on Saint Asaph Street shared the news via Instagram last Wednesday (3rd June), writing: “All great parties must come to an end. After seven amazing years we’ve made the hard decision to sell our business and make way for the next chapter. People make places, to everyone that partied with us over the years, thank you.”

According to the post, a final closing party is scheduled for 27th June, with a month-long series of events leading up to the venue’s departure. The club has been a cornerstone of the local electronic music community since opening in 2019, hosting a diverse array of international talent including Conducta, Ed Rush, Ivy Lab, Mala, and Shy FX.

In comments provided to The Press, Hide owners Mitch Ryder and Sam Smith clarified that the decision to sell was not driven by financial hardship, noting that the club “was doing well financially” when they were approached by a buyer. The sale represents a strategic exit for the owners rather than a forced closure due to the economic pressures currently impacting the wider hospitality and nightlife sectors.

The closure of Hide follows a trend of venue instability globally. Recent months have seen high-profile closures and announcements across the UK, including Manchester’s The White Hotel, which is set to shut in January 2027, as well as London’s Corsica Studios and Bristol’s Motion and The Underground. These closures highlight the ongoing challenges facing the industry, which have prompted initiatives such as London’s Nightlife Taskforce and exhibitions like the one recently hosted at the V&A South Kensington celebrating the UK’s lost music venues.
