Christal Zone – Rai Rai / Kanashiyana

Christal Zone – Rai Rai / Kanashiyana

BBE strikes again, unearthing another J Jazz jewel. Christal Zone’s ‘Rai Rai / Kanashiyana’ is a mindbending jazz‑rock 7” from 1971, fusing free jazz energy with jagged folk textures and a raw, hypnotic groove. The koto and shamisen (traditional Japanese string instruments) slash across the two tracks, colliding with Algerian raï rhythms, and freeform chaos — bridging centuries and continents in dense, ritualistic, and wildly unrestrained patterns. Originally a promo-only rarity, cut at a moment when Japan’s underground jazz scene was pressing visionary experiments in tiny runs that rarely left the country, this first-time reissue proves once again that BBE are expert diggers of hidden gems.
