Ata Kak, legendary Ghanaian musician, shares first new music since 1994 via Awesome Tapes From Africa
Renowned Ghanian musician Ata Kak has shared his first new music since 1994. ‘Yasi Town’ landed on Awesome Tapes From Africa this week.
You can listen to the track below. A full, ‘Batakari’, album will follow on 7th November.
Now 65-years-old, Kak’s first mixtape, 1994’s ‘Obaa Sima’, is considered a classic. Although it was recorded in his adoptive home of Toronto, Canada, where he moved after spending time playing with a reggae band in Germany, the record is widely seen as reflecting sounds of his homeland via rap, scatting, live percussion, traditional Akan harp and song.
Failing to make much of an impact at the time, a reissued version arrived through Awesome Tapes in 2015, catalysing renewed interest in the artist’s work. Alongside a crew of London-based musicians, he then began performing live again, and has since played major events such as Pop Montréal, Portugal’s Flow festival, and Glastonbury.
