Amy Dabbs – Rhythms

Amy Dabbs’s early releases alternated between sensuous deep house and rowdy UK bass. But lately, she’s been blurring the boundaries (and BPMs) between her two selves. ‘First Love’ starts with a slowed amen break before romantic pads come wandering in. But after the breakdown, she slips in a syncopated garage rhythm. ‘It’s Not Me It’s You,’ inverts the formula. Clocking in around 160 BPM, it’d be a jungle banger if it weren’t for the velvety piano serenading us. Dabbs makes deep house like a producer who grew up calling for rewinds, and jungle like she’s got a bag full of Masters at Work records. And in the process, she sounds like no one else.
