Amsterdam venues have joined together in a nightlife safety campaign after the murder of a 17-year-old girl on her way home after a night out.
Clubs like Shelter, Skate Cafe and Garage Noord are sharing the “Rect Op De Nacht” (Right To The Night) hashtag and graphic following news of a teenager’s murder on early Wednesday morning, 20th August, NL Times reports. The victim, publicly known only as Lisa, was murdered while cycling home to Abcoude after a night out, according to Euro News. It is reported that, pior to the attack, she had called A police to report that someone was following her. A 22-year-old man, who is also suspected of one rape and another attempted sexual assault, all in August, has been arrested as suspect.
The orange #rechtopdenacht campaign graphic reads (translated): “Right to the night. I claim the night. I claim the streets. I demand that the fear be shifted. I demand twenty-four hours in my day. I demand that 17-year-old girls come home safely.”
From 10 PM this evening, Tuesday, 26th August, bars and clubs throughout Amsterdam will illuminate orange and display text from a poem by author Nienke ‘s Gravemade as part of the collective “Claim The Night” campaign.
Organisers have launched a GoFundMe to crowdfund to have “Claim The Night” signs put up across the Netherlands. “The ultimate goal: a campaign that not only draws attention to this problem, but also offers help, for example with action perspectives for men”, a translation of the description reads. The campaign has raised more than €491,000 of its €530,000 goal at time of writing.
