United Airlines Announces First-Ever Nonstop Route From the US to Ibiza

The Ibiza pilgrimage is about to get a lot less painful. United Airlines announced Tuesday that it will launch the first-ever scheduled nonstop flight between North America and Ibiza, with four weekly flights from Newark starting May 31, 2027 — right as the island’s 2027 opening parties hit full swing.

If you’ve ever done the New York-to-Ibiza run, you know the current drill: connect through Madrid, Barcelona, or Lisbon, lose half a day each way, and pray your checked bag makes the same journey you do. Come 2027, it’s one flight on United’s new Airbus A321XLR, and you wake up a short cab ride from Hï, Ushuaïa, Pacha, and the rest of the island’s superclubs. The route is still subject to government approval, according to the announcement, but United says seats go on sale via its website and app.

The Ibiza route headlines what United is calling the largest international expansion in its history — ten new destinations for 2027, including a second Spanish first in Valencia, plus Marseille, Toulouse, Sardinia, Sicily, and even Okinawa. But let’s be honest about which one made the press release pop. Ibiza’s tourism office has reportedly been lobbying for direct US service for years, and American attendance on the island has climbed steadily even with the connection hassle baked in.

There’s a precedent here, too. United started flying Newark to Palma de Mallorca in 2022, and that route kept growing on the strength of demand. “We aim to have a destination on our route map for every traveler, at every stage of their lives,” United’s Patrick Quayle said in the announcement — and apparently that includes the stage of your life where you’re rallying for a 6 AM Marco Carola closing set.

A direct flight collapses an Ibiza weekend from a logistical project into something you can actually pull off with two vacation days and questionable judgment.
